AMD confirms Radeon RX 8800 and RX 8600 GPUs via ROCm patches

AMD's next-generation graphics cards are on the horizon, and a recent leak has all but confirmed the Radeon RX 8000 series name. While AMD has remained tight-lipped about its upcoming GPUs, code changes within the ROCm library have revealed what we presume to be their naming.

As reported by VideoCardz, the ROCm library, a software suite for GPU computing, now explicitly mentions two upcoming GPUs: the RX 8800 and RX 8600. This strongly suggests that AMD will indeed be using the Radeon RX 8000 branding for its next-gen graphics cards, aligning with previous rumours and expectations. The RX 8800 series will be powered by the Navi 48 GPU (GFX1201), while the RX 8600 series will use the Navi 44 GPU (GFX1200). Both GPUs are based on AMD's RDNA 4 architecture, promising significant performance and efficiency improvements over the current generation.

Interestingly, the ROCm library code doesn't mention an RX 8900 series. This aligns with reports that AMD has scrapped plans for a larger Navi 4X GPU, potentially leaving a gap in the high-end segment.

While detailed specifications remain under wraps, previous leaks have hinted at a potential configuration for the flagship RX 8800 XT. It's rumoured to feature up to 4,096 cores and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, potentially rivalling Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4080 in performance. The Radeon RX 8000 series is expected to be revealed at CES 2025.
