AMD confirms a batch of RX 7900 XTX reference cards have cooler issues

We've been hearing about 7900 XTX reference cards with very high junction temperatures for a few weeks, and AMD has now responded. Speaking with PCWorld, Scott Herkelman, senior VP and GM at AMD Radeon, confirmed there is indeed a batch of AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference graphics cards with faulty vapour chambers.

In an interview conducted by PCWorld, Herkelman confirmed that AMD is aware of the reports regarding the high-temperature hotspots and has already identified the issue. According to the AMD Radeon VP, only a small percentage of RX 7900 XTX Made by AMD (MBA) cards (reference designs) are affected.

Moreover, Herkelman said there was no safety concern regarding this issue, so at least users who own an affected card know it is still safe to run. Additionally, he confirmed that the faulty vapour chamber only affects gaming performance, as the cards throttle to avoid damage to the components due to insufficient cooling. Lastly, Herkelman also confirmed Der8auer findings, which claimed that the issue was the lack of water in the vapour chamber.

Those who own an AMD or board partner MBA graphics card affected by this issue should contact the vendor's support team and report the situation. Once confirmed, the vendor respective will offer a replacement for the faulty card. AMD confirmed it has enough units to replace all the cards affected by this issue, voiding the rumours about a shortage of Radeon RX 7900 XTX cards.
