New leak points towards Snapdragon 815 specs

Qualcomm’s next flagship smartphone chip, the Snapdragon 815, is on the way according to new leaks. The Snapdragon 815 will reportedly be an eight core chip with four Cortex-A72 processor cores and four Cortex-A53 processor cores.

This information all comes from GizmoChina, which has had a string of leaks recently. These eight cores found on the Snapdragon 815 will be laid out in ARM’s big.LITTLE configuration, similarly to the Snapdragon 810, which is currently rolling out in flagship devices this year.

The Cortex-A72 cores are the real stars here as they are the result of ARM’s latest mobile processor designs, which are set to improve power efficiency, which will have a knock on effect on thermals, something that the Snapdragon 810 has struggled with.

The chip may also feature a new Adreno GPU, which has yet to be seen, produced using the 16nm process. However, the Snapdragon 815 may be delayed as Qualcomm does not want to hurt the sales of upcoming flagships using the Snapdragon 810, including the HTC One M9, the LG G-Flex 2 and maybe even the follow-up to the OnePlus One.

Currently it is not clear as to when we will see the chip in a consumer device but it looks like we may have to wait until next year.

KitGuru Says: Qualcomm needs greater power efficiency in future chips, if the rumours about the Snapdragon 810 are to be believed. However, if the 815 has been delayed then it looks like Qualcomm isn’t in a rush to replace the chip either so we will have to wait and see how things play out.
