Panther Lake will reportedly get 5th generation Intel NPUs

According to recent reports, Intel's upcoming Panther Lake CPUs will feature a new NPU (Neural Processing Unit) architecture referred to as “NPU5”. Including NPUs in processors is pushing AI into the hands of consumers worldwide, with Intel's Meteor Lake and Lunar Lake CPUs already harnessing this technology to bring substantial AI computation power to compatible devices.

The latest development suggests that Intel is pushing the boundaries further, as Linux patches (via Phoronix) indicate that the future “Panther Lake” SoCs will feature the new 5th Gen NPUs. While details about the performance of these 5th-generation NPUs remain scarce, early indications point to a streamlined integration process, with the driver code paths showing similarities to their predecessors.

Notably, Intel's previous NPUs have showcased significant advancements in performance, with Meteor Lake's NPU3 delivering 11.5 TOPs and Lunar Lake's NPU4 offering an impressive 48 TOPs of peak AI computation. With such remarkable progress in NPU technology, expectations are high for Panther Lake and its AI capabilities, especially given the increasing significance of AI in consumer computing.

Taking a closer look at Panther Lake, the “Core Ultra 300” SKUs are anticipated to feature Cougar Cove P-Cores and Skymont E-Cores, complemented by a next-generation iGPU, Xe3, dubbed Celestial. These new processors are expected to be released sometime in 2025, likely during the second half of the year.
