Apple M2 Max and Pro chips top PassMark laptop CPU ranking

PassMark's laptop CPU single-thread ranking has been updated with Apple's new M2 Max and Pro chips. Currently, the top-four CPUs are all M2 chips, but with the Intel Raptor Lake-HX series around the corner, that may change soon.

As seen on PassMark's ranking for laptop CPU single-threaded performance, the Apple M2 Max sits at the top, followed by the 10-core and 12-core variants of the M2 Pro and the standard M2 chip. Intel's best-placed chip, the Core i9-12900HX, is in fifth place. As for AMD's fastest single-threaded CPU in this benchmark, it's the Ryzen 7 7735HX, which can be found in the 25th place.

While neither Intel nor AMD chips can break the 4K point barrier, the latest Apple M2 chips do it with margin. The 12-core M2 Pro variant is slightly slower than the 10-core one in single-threaded, scoring 4,174 points vs 4,227 points. The M2 Max goes a little further, achieving a 4,283 points mark. Considering the M2 Max can boost higher than the other two, it's no surprise that it would be faster than its siblings.

Although these scores are rather impressive, once Intel releases the Core i9-13900HX, i9-13950HX, and i9-13980HX, we might see some changes in this table. Still, one should note that contrary to the M2 chips, these Intel chips will likely need better cooling systems to keep temperatures in check, whereas M2 Pro and Max probably don't.
