AMD Ryzen and Athlon 7020 C-series APUs now available for Chromebooks

To redefine the Chromebook experience, AMD has officially unveiled its highly anticipated 7020C series APUs. With four variants to choose from, these processors are set to elevate the performance and efficiency of Chromebooks to new heights.

While the 7020C series processors are not based on the latest Zen 4 or even Zen 3 architecture, they utilize the proven Zen 2 architecture and are manufactured using an advanced 6nm node. For the iGPU side, you'll find RDNA 2 graphics cores. For battery life, AMD is promising significant improvements, with up to 19.5 hours of usage.

The flagship SKU of this series is the Ryzen 5 7520C, featuring four cores, eight threads and a maximum boost clock of 4.3 GHz. On the other end of the spectrum, the Athlon Silver 7120C offers a more modest configuration with two cores, two threads and a maximum boost clock of 3.5 GHz. All processors in the series are equipped with Radeon 610M integrated graphics, featuring 2 CUs.

The following table includes the specifications for each AMD Ryzen/Athlon 7020 C-series APU:

Model Cores / Threads Base/Boost Frequency Total Cache (MB) TDP (Watts) GPU Model
AMD Ryzen 5 7520C 4/8 2.8/4.3 GHz 6 MB 15 W AMD Radeon 610M
AMD Ryzen 3 7320C 4/8 2.4/4.1 GHz 6 MB 15 W AMD Radeon 610M
AMD Athlon Gold 7220C 2/4 2.4/3.7 GHz 5 MB 15 W AMD Radeon 610M
AMD Athlon Silver 7120C 2/2 2.4/3.5 GHz 3 MB 15 W AMD Radeon 610M

AMD has pitted its latest 7020C APUs against the Zen1-based Ryzen 3000C series and MediaTek Kompanio mobile SoCs. According to AMD, the 7320C processor exhibits an average performance boost of up to 1.6x on Chromebooks compared to its predecessors. Additionally, it offers a significant 15% performance advantage over competing MediaTek products while still providing longer battery life—an enticing proposition for Chromebook users.

Opting for an AMD APU in a Chromebook brings many advantages. First, the Radeon 610M RDNA2 iGPU supports up to 4K 60Hz displays. Furthermore, the 7020C chips support LPDDR5 memory, WiFi-6 and Bluetooth 5.2. Lastly, users can benefit from enhanced security features.

One of the first Chromebooks featuring these APUs has also been announced – the Dell Latitude 3445, which will hit the market in the current quarter.
