AMD Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X will reportedly consume more power after upcoming AGESA update

New developments suggest that Zen 5 desktop parts could soon come with increased default power limits. The upcoming AGESA 1.2.0.1A Patch A is anticipated to raise the default power limitations (TDP) from 65W to 105W.

The report is from chi11eddog, who claims this adjustment is expected to impact both the 8-core Ryzen 7 9700X and the 6-core Ryzen 5 9600X. Interestingly, previous reports indicated that the power limit for the 9700X might be raised to 120W, but if the new information is accurate, AMD will likely increase the default power, but not to the extent initially suggested.

This modification arrives shortly after the initial reviews of the Ryzen 9000 series, where lower power consumption was highlighted as one of the primary benefits over its predecessor. However, these same reviews stated that the performance uplift wasn't as noticeable as expected. With increased TDPs, the performance difference between the Ryzen 7000 and 9000 counterparts will likely increase a few more percentage points at the cost of increased power consumption.

AMD has not officially confirmed the TDP reduction, and it remains unclear whether it will be included in the final BIOS, which is yet to be released.
