AMD “Phoenix 2” APU to pack Zen 4 and Zen 4c cores

AMD recently confirmed the existence of the Phoenix 2 APU, a smaller version of the original Phoenix silicon used in mobile systems, laptops, Mini-PCs, and handheld consoles. While it was widely known that AMD would introduce a smaller die based on the Zen 4 and RDNA 3 architectures, the exact specifications of these processors were previously unknown.

According to Golden Pig Upgrade Pack (via VideoCardz), the Phoenix 2 APU die measures 137 mm2, making it approximately 1/4 smaller than the original APU that packs 8 cores and 16 threads. Despite being smaller, the leaked image of the Phoenix 2 APU suggests that it uses the same FP7 socket as the original Phoenix APU.

This smaller version, known as Phoenix 2, has fewer CPU and GPU cores and is expected to be used by the lower-end Ryzen 7040U series APUs. These lower-end APUs are presumably the Ryzen 5 7540U (Phoenix 1 and 2 chips) and the Ryzen 3 7440U. The former will pack 2x Zen 4 cores and 4x Zen 4c cores and a 4-CU RDNA 3 iGPU (Radeon 740M). The latter is expected to feature 2x Zen 4 cores and 2x Zen 4c cores with the same RDNA 3 iGPU. These changes have resulted in a smaller die size and potentially reduced power requirements.

These processors have not yet been seen in commercially available laptops. However, based on the leaked pictures, It appears AMD has already started shipping them to OEMs.

KitGuru says: AMD is slowly expanding its range of hybrid processors. For now, these chips are mobile-only but we may eventually see AMD match Intel with hybrid processors for desktops.
