Twitter announce 100 million user base globally

Twitter are going from strength to strength. According to Dick Costolo, they have 100 million users now globally. Of those, more than half are active daily and 40 percent of them read the site without tweeting.

Five billion tweets are made now every month and they have an audience of 400 million unique visitors each month, with a 50 percent mobile user base. The statistics are incredible and show the stunning growth of the platform in the last 12 months.

Part of the appeal of the Twitter platform is the fact that many celebrities such as leading music and movie stars use the platform to interact with their fanbase, divulging up to the minute snippets of their lives. Leading UK footballers such as Wayne Rooney and Les Ferdinand also use it regularly to share their views on both the entertainment industry and to keep their supporters updated with personal details and behind the scenes information.

Reference site twitaholic have a list of the top stars, and right now the top two are US oriented pop stars Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, who have 13312280 and 12475485 followers respectively. The US president Barack Obama is in third place with 9968588 followers.

Kitguru says: Twitter has been seen in some negative light recently as it was one of the social media platforms used by rioters in the UK.
