Western Digital and Kioxia reportedly planning merger

Back in 2019, Toshiba Memory spun off into its own company and rebranded as Kioxia. In 2021, rumours of a potential merger with Western Digital emerged but nothing ever came of it. Now, those same rumours are spinning up again.

According to Japan Times, WD and Kioxia have been holding merger talks for months with the aim of reaching a final agreement in August. The deal would see WD spin off its flash business to merge with Kioxia, according to sources said to be familiar with the matter.

Combined, Kioxia and Western Digital would prove to be a huge rival to Samsung, another giant in the NAND and memory markets. If the merger does go ahead, Kioxia executives will continue to run the business, the report claims.

The merged company would be based in Japan and would eventually be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

KitGuru Says: These talks don't always come to fruition, as we saw in 2021 when rumours about this first started up. If the report is accurate, we should hear more in August.
