Qualcomm unveils new wireless audio tech optimised for gaming

This week, Qualcomm unveiled its latest innovation in audio for the Qualcomm S3 Gen 2 sound platform. The new solution is optimised for gaming, combining Snapdragon Sound and LE audio to deliver ultra-low latency and lag-free wireless audio with voice back-channel for in-game chat.

The Qualcomm S3 Gen 2 Sound platform is designed for use in dongles and adapters including support for Snapdragon Sound technology. OEMs will also be able to add Auracast broadcast audio functionality to dongles and adapters for use with devices ranging from phones, PCs, laptops and TVs.

The platform supports Qualcomm aptX adaptive audio, Bluetooth streaming and music streaming up to 24-bit at 96kHz, making it ideal for high-end wireless headphones.

For gaming this solution is optimised for adapters used in audio sources. When paired with Qualcomm S5 and S3 Gen 2 based earbuds and headsets, it delivers robust connectivity and dynamic latency adaption based on the external RF environment. Gamers can walk away from their consoles or PC and still hear all the gaming action and participate in the chat with no interruptions to the audio.

The first OEM-made dongle using Qualcomm's new technology will launch later this year. These dongles will utilise Qualcomm's proprietary codec to maintain connection over longer distances.
