Cherry is revamping the MX switch – introducing the MX2A line-up

Cherry MX switches have been popular amongst mechanical keyboard users for decades and while new switch types have arrived over the years, we've never seen a complete overhaul of the classic MX switches. That changes this year with Cherry announcing the MX2A, aiming to be the new standard in mechanical switches.

Designed by Cherry in Germany, the MX2A promises smoother actuation compared to current MX switches and improved acoustics. The MX2A line will include the full-size derivatives such as MX Red, MX Brown, MX Black, MX Speed Silver, MX Silent Red, and their respective RGB variants, ensuring users can find a switch that perfectly suits their preferences.

The MX2A switches ship with a new spring design, changing from cylindrical to barrel geometry for near-contactless linear movement, reducing spring deformation and scratching in this long-lasting switch. An updated, unique spring-centring stem adorned with a “crown” of ribs ensures a more precise and consistent feel and sound, reducing scratchiness and improving sliding properties. All MX2A switches will also use the Gold Crosspoint contact system, which is an industry leading feature enabling a debounce time of less than 1ms.

If you are a big fan of the distinct clicky sound and general type-feel of MX Blue switches, then you will be happy to know that these switches will continue to ship without the lubrication and barrel spring present on the new MX2A line-up. As a die-hard MX Blue user myself, I see why Cherry would not want to mess with perfection.

To kick off the rollout of MX2A switches, Cherry XTRFY is introducing the new K5V2 keyboard, a 65% board based on the original K5, complete with customisable switches, stabilisers and keycaps – you can even replace the frame and logo plate if you want for a true custom keyboard.

Cherry MX2A switches will be available first for business clients, like other mechanical keyboard makers. Sales to DIY enthusiasts and consumers will take place at a later date.
