Earlier this month, it was reported that Intel had decided to end production of its NUC mini PCs, but left the door open for OEMs to make their own branded NUCs. Now, Intel has announced a new partnership with Asus to produce future NUC systems. 

Moving forward, Asus will manufacture and develop NUC systems instead of Intel. However, this is a non-exclusive license, meaning that other OEMs could potentially work with Intel in the future to produce NUCs. It is a similar concept to Valve's Steam Machines, with multiple vendors to choose from and a licensed brand tying it all together.

Sam Gao, Intel Client Platform Solutions General Manager, said: “Our NUC systems product team delivered unique products that spurred innovation in the ultra-small form factor market. As we pivot our strategy to enable ecosystem partners to continue NUC systems product innovation and growth, our priority is to ensure a smooth transition for our customers and partners. I am looking forward to ASUS continuing to deliver exceptional products and supporting our NUC systems customers.”

Asus will be making 10th Gen and 13th Gen powered NUC systems, in addition to developing future designs under a new business unit known as ASUS NUC BU.
