Display Taiwan: Chunghwa Picture Tubes shows 1920×1200 tablet displays

By now it’s pretty clear that the display market is moving towards higher resolutions again and it’s about time, as 1920×1080 displays at every size imaginable are simply getting boring. During Display Taiwan 2012 which is taking place in Taipei this week, CPT or Chunghwa Picture Tubes was showing off a pair of new tablet displays with the good old 16:10 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1920×1200.

CPT is one of Taiwan’s largest manufacturers of mobile displays and the company doesn’t actually make any displays over 21.5-inches in size, unlike its local competitors. The two new tablet displays are some of the more interesting models CPT was displaying at the show, as the company will be offering a 10.1 and a 8.9-inch model with a native resolution of 1920×1200 pixels.

The 10.1-inch model has a brightness of 700 nits, a contrast ratio of 800:1 and 178 degree viewing angles, whereas the smaller 8.9-inch model has a brightness of 450 nits and a contrast ratio of 700:1 with the same view angles. The only disappointment in both cases is the poor response time of 30 and 50ms respectively which is far from cutting edge, even for tablet displays.

Sadly these panels can’t be used for much else than mobile devices due to the fact that they’re relying on a MIPI interface, so don’t expect to see these displays in non-ARM based devices. We’re sorry if we shattered anyone’s hopes for a 1920×1200 netbook, it ain’t gonna happen. These panels should already be with CPT’s customers, but we’ll just have to wait and see what devices will use them, but hopefully that won’t take too long.

Kitguru says: These might not be retina displays, but they’re still pretty sweet and a huge improvement over your average 1366×768 screen.
