Writer threatens divorce unless partner converts to Apple tech

Apple lovers are a fanatical bunch and we often hear of funny and amusing stories, including camping out for days in the rain for a new product launch. New York Writer Susan Orlean was recently on stage at Macworld talking about her love of technology and new gadgets when she mentioned that her husband, a Windows users was told to adopt the Macintosh, or else.

CultOfMac, have an amusing piece on the subject and she apparently found that hauling her Macbook around was too tiring. When the iPad was released she found it solved all her problems when traveling. She said “It solved all of my problems.”

Orlean is a staff writer for The New Yorker and her book The Orchid Thief was made into a movie, staring Meryl Streep. Her latest book, Rin Tin tin: The Life and the Legend, is about the famous doggie star, which was made into a movie.

Susan Orlean: A lover of Apple products

Her love of the iPad extends to her family members. She has four iPads in the house, one for her, and her son, her husband. She recently bought one for their nanny too.

She said “We got one for our nanny as a Christmas present. I’ve never seen such joy on someone’s face.”

Her poor husband is a Windows lover and she converted him to Apple technology. “Do you want to stay married?” she said, jokingly. Obviously the MacWorld crowd loved that.

“I persuaded him,” she laughed. “I got him in line. Now he has an iPhone, an iPad, a MacBook. He’s a changed man.”

While she is joking, we wonder how many times this has happened between a couple? Would it bother you, if your partner used a Windows or Macintosh computer?

  1. Someone should show this white upper class lady the following article:

She is a despicable person for indirectly exploiting people. This is no less than buying blood diamonds from Sierra Leone.

  2. People always single out Apple for attacks of that sort. Smear Campaigns are increasingly common against the Tech Giant as their Sales continue to grow every year.

Foxconn doesn’t only produce Apple products you know. If you look deep enough, you’d probably be able to find similar conditions for many other major Tech Manufacturers in China.

And seriously, what IS your problem? I’m pretty sure she was joking, and if she wasn’t, well, that wedding wouldn’t have lasted more than a few more years anyway. “Indirectly exploiting” what? She used something she considered “superior”, and convinced the people around her that it was better. She succeeded. So what? That happens every day all over the world. What do you think Investments are? One guy convinces the Investor its better to invest with them, than with someone else. That exploiting too? Get real.

Your Blood Diamond comparison is ridiculous. Blood Diamonds contribute solely to War, in one form or another. Apple at the very least, actually donates to Charities, regardless of if they were aware of the conditions their Apple Products were being manufactured in.

Try convincing an African Warlord to donate to Charity, he’d think you’re a joke.

  3. Its a good point. Apple do tend to get singled out, but the same factories produce many other products including lenovo, ACER etc. HP.

Indeed and that’s because they DO use slave laborers. As for other manufacturers that do the same i have noted them and refuse to buy they product. I do my research, white upper class lady just hurts people with ignorance. I bet she is a Christian too.

  5. Out of curiosity – Do you also not buy products created by companies owned by Zionist Jews as well, because of their “New World Order” Conspiracy, or is that not something you buy into just yet?

I said i don’t buy products created in work bad work environments….so no to your question, it;s not a criteria for me but nice troll attempt.

  7. Stec,
Seriously, just because a person forces her husband to use Apple products…she becomes Christian? And if so, what is wrong in being christian? I am Catholic and don’t use any Apple Products. I am a huge fan of Android and linux and I know many people from my community who share the same views.

In short, Stupidity knows no Religion.

  8. I use Windows, I’ve owned macs and have an ipod, I have an Android phone… but there’s only one group of users who seem determined that there must be no competition or opposition to ‘their’ company. One day they’ll maybe get their wish and find, that without competition, their products stagnate and triple in price. Turkeys voting for Xmas
