20 years ago, Sony Santa Monica released God of War – a platforming spectacle fighter with a ton of ambition and an interesting world. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of this seminal PS2 title, the studio has announced a bunch of purchasable merch, as well as the ‘Dark Odyssey collection’ update for God of War Ragnarök.
Celebrating the franchise’s 20th anniversary via the PlayStation Blog, Grace Orlady – the Lead Community Manager at Santa Monica Studio – wrote: “On March 22, God of War will officially reach its 20th anniversary! Back in 2005 when the first God of War released, no one at Santa Monica Studio anticipated the success this series would have. Every creative endeavor carries the hopes of those who shaped it that they might be able to carve a legacy in the industry. What makes those hopes a reality has always been the support of players who chose to pick up the game and go on a journey with us.
Orlady continued, “As we reflect back on the past two decades of God of War, we want to celebrate this milestone with you by sharing the exciting things we have planned leading up to the anniversary.”
Alongside being able to purchase a bunch of new merch; visit a gallery in California and buy the two most recent titles for a solid 60% and 20% off respectively, God of War Ragnarök is set to get a collection of throwback cosmetics.
Dubbed the ‘Dark Odyssey collection’, this free update will arrive on the 20th of March, bringing with it the secret Black and Gold skin from GoW 2 for Kratos alongside the Dark Odyssey Armor Set; weapon skins; as well as outfits for both Atreus and Freya.
While some fans were hoping for the original God of War trilogy to be remastered for PS5, these 20th anniversary celebrations will hopefully satiate these desires. Perhaps we’ll see said remasters in half a decade's time for the 25th anniversary.
