11 Bit Studios, the Polish studio behind the Frostpunk series, has faced several setbacks this year. Following the public's lukewarm reception of Frostpunk 2 and the delay of The Alters, the company has now announced the cancellation of an unannounced console project and subsequent staff layoffs.
In a recent investor relations report, 11 Bit Studios revealed the cancellation of Project 8, a narrative-driven game intended to be the studio's first console-focused title. CEO Przemek Marszal explained that the project, which began development in 2018, faced increasing challenges due to evolving market trends and rising development costs. “This product was created in times when narrative-driven, story-rich games were on the rise,” Marszal stated. However, shifting market dynamics and budget constraints led to concerns about the project's viability. The management board ultimately lost confidence in the team's ability to deliver a high-quality product within a reasonable timeframe and decided to drop the project.
The cancellation of Project 8 is a significant financial blow to 11 Bit Studios, with an estimated loss of PLN 48.4 million (£9.4 million). Sadly, it has also resulted in layoffs for an unspecified number of developers. Marszal assured affected employees will receive severance packages, psychological support, and job placement assistance. He also stated that over half of the Project 8 team will be offered opportunities to join other projects within the studio.
This news comes amidst a wave of layoffs in the video game industry, with an estimated 15,000 employees losing their jobs in 2024 alone. Despite these setbacks, 11 Bit Studios remains committed to its other projects, including Frostpunk 2, which recently won Best Sim/Strategy Game at The Game Awards 2024. The studio has outlined a roadmap for Frostpunk 2, including a console release in 2025 and multiple expansions.
