Surprise! From Software announces brand-new Elden Ring game

From Software has had a historical run with Elden Ring. The game launched in 2022 to wide acclaim and multiple GOTY awards. Its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, was so good that it forced The Game Awards to accept game expansions for future GOTY awards. Now, the studio looks to keep that train rolling with a brand-new Elden Ring game.

Elden Ring: Nightreign was revealed last night during The Game Awards 2024. This is a standalone Elden Ring game, rather than another expansion. This new game is set in the same continent as the original, but with a smaller, more manageable map.

The game is set in the Limgrave region, which players of Elden Ring will know quite well. However, this will not be your typical Souls-like experience. Instead, Elden Ring: Nightreign is a co-op game, intended for up to three players. It also has roguelike elements, with enemies being randomised at the start of each run, so you never quite know what you'll be going up against.

Given that a lot of fans already played through Elden Ring in co-op, it will be interesting to see what changes From Software makes to its usual formula with Nightreign, as it will be the first From Software title designed from the ground-up to be played in groups.

Elden Ring: Nightreign is set to launch on PC, Xbox and PlayStation in 2025.
