Doki Doki Literature Club surpasses 30 million total players

First released back in 2017, Doki Doki Literature Club was a unique horror-themed visual novel which subverted many of the genre’s typical elements – breaking the 4th wall in countless creative ways to name just one. Initially released for free on Itch.io, the game became a viral hit – with its subsequent ports having now pushed the game to over 30 million players.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the publishers of the current version of DDLC – Serenity Forge – said:

“It’s an absolute honor to announce that more than 30 million players have joined the Literature Club across all versions of DDLC! Thank you so much to our passionate and loyal community for the all the love and support over the years, we’re so grateful for you all .”

While 30 million players is absolutely massive – especially for an indie visual novel – as mentioned, the game was first made available for free via Itch.io. Additionally, DDLC Plus was recently included as part of PlayStation Plus’ monthly line-up – likely helping to boost the figure.

Even so, there is no denying that Doki Doki Literature Club has had a lasting impact, and showed that the possibilities in the video game space are nearly endless. It will be interesting to see how Team Salvato’s upcoming ‘Magicore Anomala’ winds up performing.
