Star Wars Outlaws received plenty of criticism for its forced-stealth missions, which would end in an instant-fail as soon as the player is spotted. This was in part due to the fact that Stealth was broken for a lot of players at launch due to various bugs. Now, Ubisoft is removing all instances of ‘forced stealth' from the game.
As part of Ubisoft's ongoing effort to fix up Star Wars Outlaws, the team has decided to do away with all ‘forced stealth' missions. Following an update, players will no longer instantly fail a mission if they are spotted by the enemy, giving them a chance to shoot their way out of trouble, much like most other modern stealth games, which often offer players a choice between taking a sneaky route, or going in guns-blazing.
Ubisoft says this change is a step towards expanding player choice in the game. Dishonored popularised this approach over a decade ago with its mix of stealth and action gameplay. Nowadays, very few Stealth games have an instant-fail mechanic, so it is good to see Ubisoft catching up to the times here.
Funnily enough, Ubisoft itself had an incredible formula for Stealth gameplay many years ago with Splinter Cell, a series that has been left dormant by Ubisoft executives for almost 15 years. The team behind Assassin's Creed Shadows took clear inspiration from the Splinter Cell series, as that game will launch with an overhauled stealth system that borrows several mechanics from the Splinter Cell games.
