Starfield has had an interesting trajectory. Following an extensive and lengthy marketing strategy, the game launched to a great deal of interest, amassing more than 10 million players within its first month. Since then however, growth has slowed down significantly – adding just 1 million more players in the past half a year to a total of 15 million
Making the announcement on via a blog post, Bethesda Game Studios revealed the latest player milestone for Starfield, saying:
“Thank you to the over 15 million players who are adventuring through the stars in Starfield! We’re thrilled that so many of you have embarked on this journey with us, and we appreciate your feedback. We are always looking for ways to improve your experience playing the game and wanted to give our community an update on the most recent adjustments we’ve made to Starfield.”
While 15 million players is nothing to sniff at, it does indicate a rather rapid and significant drop in interest. As mentioned, Starfield amassed more than 10 million players within the first month following its September release last year.
The game was then reported to have reached 14 million total players by June of this year – taking an additional 6 months to add 2 million players.
Despite the release of the game’s Shattered Space Expansion in late September, it seems Starfield has failed to attract many new players, as it took a further 5 months to go from 14 to 15 million.
While not a 1:1 comparison (especially as Starfield is available on Game Pass), Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion sold 3 million copies in its first week, helping to push the game to 25 million copies SOLD.
Bethesda have indicated that they plan to support Starfield for the foreseeable future with additional content and new expansions, and so we will have to wait and see whether any of those manage to move the needle.
