While film and TV adaptations of video games are currently in a renaissance of sorts, not every single production has proven to be a success. Case in point: The Borderlands Movie, which following years of development launched back in August as the lowest-rated game adaptation ever. Now, the CEO of Lionsgate has officially commented on where things went wrong.
As part of the fiscal earnings report for film distribution company Lionsgate, the company’s CEO – Jon Feltheimer – discussed the substantial critical and commercial failure of the Borderlands Movie, saying (as transcribed by IGN)
“On Borderlands, nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong. It sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usually strict financial models.”
As stated by Feltheimer, The Borderlands Movie was cooking in the oven for far too long, with the film first being announced all the way back in August of 2015 – nearly 10 years ago.
In addition, with adaptations of games now seeing a major rise in overall quality and success, the Borderlands film very much felt like a product which was incubated during a different time in the industry – because it was.
