Take-Two sells off ‘Private Division’ publishing arm

Over the past six years or so, Take-Two has operated its own indie publishing label, known as Private Division. Over time, Private Division supported games like The Outer Worlds, Roll7 and Kerbal Space Program. Now, following on from Take-Two's major acquisition of Gearbox Software, the company is selling off Private Division. 

Take-Two confirmed that Private Division has been sold off as part of the company's earnings call this week. Elaborating on the news in an interview with Variety, Take-Two CEO, Struass Zelnick, labelled this is a “strategic decision” in an effort to “focus resources on growing the core businesses” – essentially, the AAA studios under Take-Two needed more money, leaving little left over to support independent developers looking for help releasing their projects.

While this means that some games will no longer receive support from Take-Two, the latest game from Moon Studios, titled ‘No Rest for the Wicked', will continue to be published by Take-Two. The game launched into Early Access earlier this year and is still undergoing active development.

It isn't immediately clear what this means for the future of Kerbal Space Program 2, which is also still in early access and has been going through troubles behind the scenes, in part due to restructuring at Take-Two. The new owners behind Private Division are said to have taken “substantially all” of the projects both released and unreleased at the company, which could give some hopes to KSP fans.

KitGuru Says: Private Division published some excellent games during its time. Hopefully under new ownership, the publisher can continue to help get interesting indie titles on the market.
