Helldivers 2 studio not against Xbox release, but its not up to them

While Helldivers 2 is an independently developed game, Sony currently has console exclusivity, with the game only being available on PS5 and skipping Xbox. It turns out, Arrowhead isn't against the idea of Helldivers 2 on Xbox, but ultimately, that decision would be in the hands of Sony and Microsoft.

Speaking on the situation a little, Helldivers 2 community manager, known as Twinbeard on the game's official Discord server, said: “It's not up to us but to Sony and Phil to duke out, but hypothetically speaking, if both partners thought it would benefit them from a financial/brand standpoint, it could.”

This was all amid discussion over the upcoming PS5 Pro update for Helldivers 2, which sparked renewed discussion of the game on other console platforms. Unfortunately, this does not appear to be a situation of a timed exclusivity deal, where the game will drop on rival platforms after a certain date. Instead, Sony would have to actively want to sell the game on Xbox.

Microsoft has played ball with Sony in recent months, having brought games like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves over to PS5. However, there is a much larger install-base of PlayStation gamers to sell an Xbox exclusive to, and not nearly as many Xbox gamers to sell PlayStation exclusives to.

KitGuru Says: Helldivers 2 is the sort of game that would thrive across all platforms and doesn't necessarily need to be exclusive. However, if you are Sony, whose portfolio often lacks in multiplayer shooters, then having Helldivers associated with your brand is almost imperative. The 2024 calendar year for PS5 would look awfully bleak without it.
