Final Sakurai YouTube video confirms work on new game

For the past few years, Masahiro Sakurai has consistently published a series of videos to his YouTube channel discussing and teaching viewers various game dev techniques and secrets. During his final video in the series, the Smash Bros. creator revealed that he’s been working on a new game for over two years now.

During the finale of his ‘Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games’ series, the Smash Bros. director revealed that all the videos published in the series were recorded between November 2021 and April 2022 – at which point he began to work on his next as-of-yet-unannounced game.

No further details on the project were shared, though according to Sakurai “assuming we’re able to get it made, it should be announced sooner or later.”

Given the fact that Sakurai has discussed moving away from the Smash Bros. series pretty much since the release of the first game, it will be interesting to see what the creator has been working on for the past two and a half years.

Hopefully we hear more about it during the inevitable Switch 2 event.
