Steam sets new record with over 14,000 games released this year

Over the years, Valve has opened up the Steam platform in a number of ways, allowing game developers to much more easily publish their titles onto the platform. As a result, the past 10 years has seen a ballooning in the number of games launched – with 2024 now surpassing last year’s record figures.

With a total of 14,567 games launched on the platform this year so far, Steam has hit a new record level of releases – surpassing last year’s peak of 14,394 games. Given the fact that there are still a solid couple of months left in the year, this figure will only continue to rise over the coming weeks.

With one exception (that being 2019), the number of games added to Steam each year has steadily increased from 2010 onwards; with the floodgates opening around 2014 – in which the total number of released games nearly quadrupled in a single year from 434 titles (2013) to 1714 (2014).

Steam Record

Of course, it’s safe to say that a high number of the games released this year could be considered shovelware, and so an increased number of releases doesn’t necessarily correlate to the quality of the service itself, but it is interesting nonetheless to see.

For further comparison, the PlayStation 5 has seen roughly 4000 games or so released for the console since its arrival back in late 2020 – and so to have Steam launch over triple the number of games in just one year is worthy of note. It’ll be interesting to see whether this trend continues in 2025.
