Ghost of Tsushima gets long awaited sequel – Ghost of Yotei

Last night during Sony's latest State of Play showcase, we finally got our first look at what Sucker Punch has been working on since the launch of its open-world hit, Ghost of Tsushima. We are finally getting a sequel, titled ‘Ghost of Yotei' and better yet, it will be out next year.

With the tale of Jin Sakai all wrapped up in the first game, Sucker Punch is taking us a few centuries into the future with this next instalment. Ghost of Yotei takes place northern Japan, around the Hokkaido region, set in the year 1603, the same time period that one of Japan's most fearsome sword wielders was believed to have lived.

The game will put players in the shoes of Atsu, a new warrior on the run from a group of Ronin. As the game will see players venturing towards the northern reaches of Japan, including the Yotei mountain, there will be plenty of grassy fields, forests and snow-filled areas to explore.

While the first game was set in a time and place where Samurai clans were more organised, that is not the case in 1603, so we can expect a very different tale. The studio has also teased new mechanics and weapon types, but we have yet to see much beyond the cinematic teaser, so we will have to wait until next year for a deeper dive into the improvements this sequel will bring.

KitGuru Says: As a huge fan of the first game, I had hoped that we would see more of Jin Sakai, but the decision to jump around different eras to tell different stories with different characters makes perfect sense and will allow this franchise to continue well into the future. After all, there is still plenty of Japan left to explore.
