Borderlands film lost well over $100 million

Last month, the Borderlands movie debuted in cinemas as the worst-rated video game adaptation ever with a 0% rating, although it did manage to climb higher into the single digits over the opening weekend. We already knew that the film was in some financial trouble when it was swiftly taken off cinema screens and made available digitally, but the full situation is quite dire.

The Borderlands movie, produced between Gearbox and Lionsgate Films, is believed to have had a production budget of $115 million, with an extra $30 million for marketing and distribution. According to The Numbers, a site that keeps track of box office sales worldwide, the Borderlands movie brought in just $31 million during its theatrical run, leading to a major loss.

With a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Borderlands sits at the bottom of the list for rated video game adaptations, debuting below some of the worst 2000s-era films, like Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Blood Rayne and Postal

The Borderlands movie will have the chance to try and make some more money back through digital and blu-ray sales, as well as potentially licensing the film out to streaming services in the future. For now though, the film is only available to buy or rent on services like Prime Video and Apple TV.
