Bungie reveals new Destiny 2 roadmap

It has been exactly 10 years since Bungie first launched Destiny and with no plans for a third game in the series, the studio is now revealing its new roadmap for the future of Destiny 2, which has received more than a few changes since the launch of The Final Shape earlier this Summer.

While this year, Bungie has focused on ‘Episodes' rather than seasonal content, Bungie will be moving forward with a new strategy in 2025. Starting next year, the team will adopt a new model, with two ‘medium-sized' expansions per year, as well as four free updates. In a lot of ways, this sounds a lot like the old Destiny 2 model, prior to the Forsaken expansion, which also featured two smaller expansions per year, alongside quarterly ‘seasons'.

As you can see in the roadmap image above, this will all kick off with ‘Codename Apollo', which is described as a “nonlinear character-driven adventure”, releasing in Summer 2025. This will be followed by another expansion in the Winter, with more traditional seasons in between to keep players engaged long-term.

Currently, Bungie only has 2025 and 2026 mapped out publicly, and depending on how these changes are received, there could be another pivot somewhere down the line. The most interesting part of this though is the mention of ‘nonlinear' stories, which indicates that players will be able to make key decisions at points in the story, rather than having everyone all following the same path, as has been the case with all other story content in the game so far.

KitGuru Says: Bungie has made some baffling decisions in recent years and I'm not sure adopting the Activision-era model with fewer employees is going to be the saving grace it needs to keep players old and new interested in Destiny 2.D
