The Epic Games Store has arrived on iOS in the EU

Ever since the big Apple/Epic Games debacle a couple years ago, the Fortnite maker has not had any real presence on Apple’s iOS platform. Thanks to rules put in place by the EU, this was announced to be changing some time this year. Finally, after years of strife, the Epic Games Store is now officially available on iOS devices – in the EU at least.

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Epic Games shared the following: “Today the Epic Games Store is available for download on iPhones in the European Union and on Android devices worldwide. The store is launching with Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe and the all-new Fall Guys for mobile, and we are working to enable all developers to launch their games and apps through the Epic Games Store in the future. We are also bringing our games to independent mobile stores including AltStore PAL today.”

Explaining why only EU iOS users will be able to access the store, Epic continued, “We’re launching on iOS devices in the European Union thanks to the Digital Markets Act, but Apple is still blocking all other iOS users outside of Europe from accessing Fortnite and Epic Games Store for iOS.”

Unsurprisingly, the Epic Games Store app is not available on the default mobile app stores, with Epic explaining that “For now, the process of installing the Epic Games Store on iOS and Android is lengthy due to Apple and Google introducing intentionally poor-quality install experiences laden by multiple steps, confusing device settings, and scare screens. We are continuing to fight in courts and work with regulators around the globe to eliminate the anticompetitive terms that Apple and Google impose on developers and consumers, so we can build a better store for everyone.”

Bringing Fortnite back to iOS is certainly a big deal, but with just 3 games currently available on the app, Epic needs to do quite a bit more to become a legit competitive app store on mobile.
