Feelings surrounding Marathon “not great” following Bungie lay-offs

The past few weeks have been far from great for Bungie. Despite being acquired by Sony for a cool few billion a couple years ago, the Destiny developers have been in a sort of free-fall – with hundreds of employee lay-offs; scope reductions and project cancellations. According to one insider, sentiment surrounding the team’s upcoming multiplayer shooter ‘Marathon’ is currently “not great” as a result.

As reported by known industry insider Jason Schreier via the Friends Per Second podcast, when asked about internal sentiment by Bungie devs on the current state of Marathon, Schreier had this to say:

“Not great, from what I’ve heard. There’s a reason it was planned for this year and slipped a whole year. People that I’ve talked to are a little pessimistic about it even hitting its current planned deadline, but we’ll see. I don’t know exactly when that is, sometime in 2025, I’m not sure. Yeah, the sentiment I’ve heard is not great at least as of a few months ago.”

The current trajectory of Bungie is a highly unfortunate one to see. From releasing one of their highest-rated expansions ever for Destiny 2 just a few months ago, to now being viewed as a shell of its former self in danger of losing all its credibility – it makes sense that developers would show concern for the future of Marathon, regardless of how good it could end up being. We will have to wait and see what happens between now and the game’s planned release.
