PS5 beta firmware update brings 3D Audio and Remote Play enhancements

Since its launch back in 2020, the PlayStation 5 has received a significant number of updates, adding brand new features alongside miscellaneous quality-of-life improvements. This latest beta update is part of the latter, though it does bring with it one potentially major addition.

Making the announcement via the PlayStation Blog, the VP of Product Management at Sony Interactive Entertainment – Hiromi Wakai – said: “We’re happy to roll out a new PS5 beta that introduces personalized 3D audio profiles for headphones and earbuds, as well as the ability to limit Remote Play access for individual users.”

As mentioned, by far the biggest feature is the addition of personalised 3D Audio. Functioning both with headphones and earbuds, the updated feature now allows you to “run through a set of sound quality tests to analyze a vast number of factors to create an audio profile that best fits your hearing characteristics.”

Remote Play also received an update, offering the ability to “adjust Remote Play settings per user and choose who is allowed to connect to your PS5 console using Remote Play.”

Perhaps most interestingly, the DualSense controller will also be getting adaptive charging, helping to lengthen the lifespan of the controller – but only for the new PS5 models.

Sony did not give an explanation as to why adaptive charging is only available on the newer PS5 models, but hopefully this is only a function of the beta – and that the full release will bring the update to everyone. We will have to wait and see.
