Apex Legends Steam reviews drop to ‘Overwhelmingly Negative’

Apex Legends players are very unhappy with the state of the game following recent announcements. Respawn announced a new Battle Pass system earlier this month, which means moving forward, players will have to spend $20 per season to unlock all of the available content. Naturally, this has turned the most hardcore fans against Respawn, leading to a flood of negative reviews.

While Apex Legends on Steam once had a positive overall rating, with many thanking EA for bringing the game to Steam and praising the on-going shooter for its mechanics, the game now sits at an ‘Overwhelmingly Negative' score, after almost 20,000 gamers posted negative reviews, or updating their previous reviews to negative.

The root cause behind this wave of backlash is immediately clear, as almost every single review is calling out the new battle pass system, which borrows ideas from sports games like NBA 2K, which also splits its paid battle pass into two different versions with separate rewards.

If Apex Legends needed a revenue boost, there were certainly better ways to go about it, rather than doubling the grind and expense for players. Respawn has not yet responded to player backlash. While this is impacting user review scores for the game, it has not put much of a dent in the game's overall player count, as the game is still garnering hundreds of thousands of concurrent players on Steam alone.
