PlayStation Portal gets much-needed software update

While the PlayStation Portal might not have been the portable PlayStation that many were hoping it might’ve been, the game streaming handheld has found its own niche. Unfortunately, even those who enjoy the device have encountered issues, especially when it comes to signing into WIFI networks. Fortunately, this has been fixed thanks to a new software update.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Hiromi Wakai – The VP of Product Management at SIE – said:

“While we recommend PS Portal to be used in your home as you have control over the quality of the Wi-Fi, it can also be used outside of the home in places where a fast and stable Wi-Fi connection is available – and we’ve seen many players take advantage of this.”

In response, the update will now let you connect to any WIFI network as you please, thanks to the addition of a much-needed verification system for networks which require you to sign in before allowing access.

Though you will need a smartphone to access the log-in portal, the process should be smooth and hassle free, with the PS Portal introducing a QR code to scan when coming across such connections.

Beyond this, the update also adds a few quality-of-life features including new visual feedback for the touchpad areas as well as the ability to display the remaining battery level percentage on the handheld’s status bar.

While certainly not a product for everyone, it is encouraging to see the PS Portal get new features and improvements – even if they perhaps should have been there from the start.
