Octopath Traveler finally comes to PlayStation, 6 years after launch

Recently, Square Enix expressed their desires to move away from console exclusives, instead wanting to focus on multiplatform development. As part of this, the publisher looks to be filling many of its previously-created holes, bringing the first Octopath Traveler to PlayStation – and the second to Xbox.

Octopath Traveller as a series has had a weird release strategy, with the first game launching exclusively on the Nintendo Switch back in 2018, before seeing a PC port the following year – eventually making its way to Xbox One in 2021, but not PlayStation.

Octopath Traveller II on the other hand arrived on Switch, PS4, PS5 and PC last year – with no Xbox version in sight.

Following a leak which seemed to suggest that the first game would be coming to PlayStation and the second to Xbox, Square Enix has now officially announced and released these titles, taking to their blog to say:

“We have some exciting news for OCTOPATH TRAVELER fans on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. From today, OCTOPATH TRAVELER is available on PS5 and PS4, and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II has launched for Xbox Series X|S! That means that both OCTOPATH TRAVELER titles are now available to play on current console platforms for the first time.”

As mentioned, the odd release cadence for the Octopath Traveller series may have put some potential fans off in the past. Hopefully this surprise launch serves as somewhat of a second opportunity for the duology (especially on Game Pass). The full blog post can be found HERE.
