Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been in playtesting for two years already

Earlier this week, Activision officially announced this year's Call of Duty. Just as leaks suggested, this year's game will come from Treyarch and will be the latest mainline entry in the Black Ops series. It would seem that Black Ops 6 has had some extra development time too, as the game has been in playtesting for two years already.

Treyarch Game Designer, Nicole Havin, commented after the Black Ops 6 reveal, stating that this one has been in playtesting for two years already. That would indicate that the game has gone through lots of refinement, in part thanks to the extra time afforded by the back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare 2 & 3.

Of course, as an annual franchise, there is something formulaic about Call of Duty's development cycle. With that in mind, there is likely a basic ‘clean slate' prototype version of the game available and ready for messing around with so teams can hit the ground running when it comes time to start production on the next game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the first entry in the Black Ops series since 2020 with Black Ops: Cold War. The new game is slated to release later this year, with a gameplay reveal coming immediately after the Xbox Showcase in June.
