New Starfield update announced, bringing 60fps and a whole lot more

Starfield launched in September last year to somewhat mixed reviews, with the perception surrounding the game being increasingly soured as time went on. That said, Todd Howard and the team at Bethesda Game Studios have been cooking a massive update – though one which arguably should’ve been available at launch.

One of the biggest and most obvious criticisms surrounding Starfield was the fact that the game ran at just 30fps on the Xbox Series X, despite Microsoft making much of its earlier console marketing all about the 60fps experience of the Xbox.

Finally, be it through extra work, further optimisation or Bethesda magic, BGS is bringing 60fps to the Xbox Series X, but that’s not all.

Appropriately named the ‘May Update’, this upcoming patch is set to go live on the 15th of May and will bring with it a boatload of enhancements, including but not limited to:

  • New and more customisable difficulty options
  • More detailed surface maps
  • Further interior ship customisation
  • New Game Plus improvements
  • 40fps mode on Xbox Series X
  • 60fps mode on Xbox Series X
  • Uncapped fps + VRR support on Series X
  • Quality of life additions

While undoubtedly a massive update which could be transformative for some, it does beg the question as to why many of these features (especially the 40 and 60fps options) weren’t available at launch – adding further fuel to the notion that buying a game day-one nets you the worst experience for the highest price.

Regardless, these features are highly welcome. The full breakdown of these additions can be found HERE.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the update? Should these have all been there at launch? What compromises do you think were made for the 60fps mode? Let us know down below.
