The reported Nexon-developed Game of Thrones MMO doesn’t exist

Earlier this week, a fan site focused on Fantasy IP like Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, claimed to have heard about an upcoming Game of Thrones MMORPG game from Nexon. As it turns out, the game being referred to was actually a previously announced mobile game from Net Marble.

It seems we got a bit too excited when we read the phrase ‘Game of Thrones MMORPG‘. The game is not being developed by Nexon as previously claimed by Redanian Intelligence, but rather Net Marble, a mobile-focused game studio. The studio's Game of Thrones title is destined for mobile devices and was already announced back in 2022. This is a simple case of misreporting, while also being quite late to a story, as the game in development had already been announced.

The news came to light when IGN contacted Nexon about its rumoured Game of Thrones game. Nexon swiftly responded by stating it “does not currently have anything in development based on Game of Thrones”.

With that in mind, the game is unlikely to be ‘similar to ESO' as previously claimed. Net Marble might be making an MMO, but as a mobile game, it will lean far more into monetisation schemes, with a free to play model, and likely followed up with various other purchases like premium currencies, time-saving items, 30-day passes for daily currency drops, and possibly even some kind of gatcha system, which has become increasingly common in the mobile market.

KitGuru Says: Now that this whole situation has been cleared up, we can go back to hoping we'll one day see a proper GoT game, developed for consoles and PCs, rather than a free-to-play cash-in.
