Yoko Taro claims Stellar Blade is better than NieR: Automata

NieR: Automata released back in 2017 on PlayStation to a wave of success, far surpassing publisher Square Enix’s expectations and reviving what is now a popular multi-media franchise. Stellar Blade is in a similar spot, coming first to PS5 while exhibiting many similarities to Yoko Taro’s own work. Interestingly, the game creator has commented on Stellar Blade, claiming that “it's much better than NieR:Automata.”

In an interview conducted by IGN, Stellar Blade director Kim Hyung-Tae and Yoko Taro sat down to discuss each creator’s processes and inspirations.

In what is likely a full circle moment for the team at SHIFT UP, Yoko Taro – whose most recent release (NieR: Automata) inspired the creation of Stellar Blade – claimed that “Stellar Blade is a really amazing game. I'd say that it's much better than NieR: Automata.”

Refuting this statement, Kim replied “The more we talk about it, the more I feel like Stellar Blade can't compete [with NieR: Automata]. I consider myself a visualist, not a storyteller. I've been creating visuals all my life, so I can't quite match Yoko Taro when it comes to storytelling. I try to make up for this with gameplay.”

While it is likely that both creators are merely exchanging pleasantries regarding each other’s titles, getting the green light from a visionary like Yoko Taro is no small feat. Hopefully fans are equally as receptive to Stellar Blade when it comes out on the 26th of April. The full interview can be found HERE.
