New PlayStation 5 Pro leak points to late 2024 launch

We first heard about plans for a PS5 Pro last year, a more powerful model with a beefed up GPU for improved ray-tracing performance to sell alongside the standard PS5 system, which underwent a redesign late last year to introduce a detachable disc drive. The latest leak includes some extra details on specs, as well as some information on a new Super Resolution technology for improved visuals.

The leaked slide first shared by Moore's Law Is Dead (and then confirmed by Tom Henderson) states that the GPU of the PS5 Pro is capable of producing 300 TOPS using 8-bit integers and 67 TFLOPS for 16-bit floating-point computations. Converting into FP32, that would be 33.5 TFLOPS at its peak, over three times more than the current PS5.

The slide also states that PS5 Pro will offer PSSR, Sony's Multi Frame Super Resolution (MSFR) implementation that uses PlayStation Machine Learning (PSML). This technology would also support HDR, handle dynamic input resolution, and support up to 8K output in future versions. Upscaling from 1080p to 4K resolution would require 2ms of GPU cycle time, with a memory capacity of just 250MB necessary. Developers can implement the technology via the official SDK, similar to AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS. Sony is allegedly comparing PSSR to FSR 2 and asserting that the former's picture quality is superior.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is expected to debut in the 2024 holiday season, so Sony should soon share the first details about the console.

KitGuru says: Assuming these numbers are correct, the upcoming PS5 Pro would offer a considerable upgrade over the current consoles. How do you think Xbox will react? Will we see an Xbox Series X mid-gen upgrade?
