PlayStation is the latest company to announce mass lay-offs

Over the past year, there have been plenty of layoffs at studios across the games industry. Unfortunately, this trend has continued into 2024. Following on from Microsoft's announced layoffs earlier this year, Sony is now cutting down its workforce at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

In an announcement today, penned by current SIE President, Jim Ryan, who will soon be leaving the company, it was announced that SIE would be letting go of as many as 900 employees, or roughly 8 percent of the workforce. This move will impact “several PlayStation Studios”, as well as employees across the US, Japan, the EMEA and APAC.

Specifically here in the UK, Sony is looking to close down its PlayStation London studio and there will be reductions made at the Firesprite Studio.

PlayStation Studios head, Hermen Hulst, has also confirmed that this move will also mean that several projects will be cancelled. However, Hulst also adds that while some projects will no longer be moving forward, this is “not a reflection on the talent or passion of team members”.

Those impacted by this will be informed by Sony bosses starting this week.

KitGuru Says: Given that Sony's recent earnings call highlighted shrinking profits and rising business costs, this move doesn't come entirely out of left field. It is also worth noting that these situations are taking place at companies across the industry, which is a reflection on the rising cost of developing ‘AAA' games.
