Nintendo Switch becomes best-selling console ever in Japan

When all is said and done, the Nintendo Switch will have been one of the most successful video game consoles of all time. With less than a year to go until the company most likely releases their next-gen successor, the 2017 handheld-hybrid has proven itself across the world – especially in Japan where it has now become the best selling console ever.

As shared by Nintendo during their most recent financial briefing (and reported on by ResetEra user Meelow), 2017’s Switch has reached a massive new milestone, surpassing 33.34 million units in Japan to become the best-selling console in the country’s history.

This feat is even more impressive when considering the fact that the Switch is a home console (albeit a hybrid one), as the previous record-holder was the portable Nintendo DS [32.99 million units] followed closely by the Game Boy / Colour [32.27 million units].

For further context, Japan has a total population of 120 million, which means that over a quarter of the country’s entire populace now own a Nintendo Switch.

Japan has always been one of Nintendo’s best-performing markets, but with the Switch, it seems as though the console manufacturer has managed to reach even higher highs. It will be interesting to see how the Switch’s successor performs in the country. We will have to wait and see.
