The Knights of the Old Republic Remake is “not being worked on” at any studio

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a fan favourite title and we've been hoping for a return to the series for a long time now. It looked like we were finally going to get exactly that when Knights of the Old Republic Remake was announced back in 2021. However, it would appear that the game has been quietly cancelled.

Aspyr announced the Knights of the Old Republic Remake with a short teaser trailer during the PlayStation Showcase in 2021. In 2022, it was confirmed that Aspyr is no longer leading development on the project, with Embracer Group moving it over to Saber Interactive.

Since then, Embracer has hit financial troubles, leading to the shutdown of several studios and hundreds of developers being laid off. Embracer's CEO refuses to even address the status of the project in earnings reports, which may be in an effort to avoid further bad press, as industry reporter, Jeff Grubb, has now said that the game “is not being worked on in any way, at any studio”.

Earlier this year, fans spotted that the original teaser trailer, as well as social media posts advertising the game, had been quietly hidden from public view. Embracer Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Disney have yet to address this. All of the silence around the project certainly lends some legitimacy to the idea that the game has hit a roadblock.

The KOTOR Remake was already having development troubles. While Aspyr was chosen to lead the project due to past experience working on various versions of the original KOTOR titles, there was an apparent disagreement somewhere along the way. Earlier rumours suggested that partners involved weren't happy with the direction Aspyr was taking with the remake, which led to the project being handed off to Saber Interactive.

KitGuru Says: This is hugely disappointing news and at this point, it seems that we can only hope that Disney is able to step in and find a new partner for a KOTOR revival.
