Destiny 2: The Final Shape arrives in February 2024

Yesterday, Bungie held its annual Destiny 2 expansion reveal event, properly unveiling The Final Shape. The expansion promises to bring the long-awaited conclusion to the ‘Light and Darkness' saga, which began with Destiny 1 all the way back in 2014.

Last year, Bungie was firing on all cylinders with The Witch Queen expansion. It was the first in Destiny's history to give me hope for Bungie's new long-term storytelling format. Much of that was dashed away with Lightfall, which I found to be hugely underwhelming story-wise and the following seasons did not do enough to keep me engaged.

The Final Shape aims to make up for that. The new expansion will bring an end to the current storyline, which began with Destiny 1 all those years ago.

As we saw in Lightfall, The Witness, leader of ‘the darkness', has successfully entered The Traveller, the mysterious white ball floating above earth, credited for gifting Guardians with their powers. Inside The Traveller is something known as The Pale Heart. This is where our big showdown with The Witness will take place as we move to stop The Traveller from being destroyed or perhaps even levied against us.

As you might expect, The Witness will be the big boss of the raid launching with The Final Shape. You'll unlock access to the raid, which takes place in The Pale Heart, by finishing the campaign. Of course, the campaign is just the beginning, as Bungie has seasons planned for after its launch, although 2024 won't be a typical year for Destiny 2 players.

Rather than the usual four seasons we would see, Bungie is splitting 2024 into three ‘episodes' of Destiny 2 content. These will be larger updates compared to the usual seasons and will have us diving deep into the aftermath of the events of the Final Shape campaign and setting up the next saga for Destiny players to dive into.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape launches on February 27th 2024.

KitGuru Says: I was incredibly disappointed with Lightfall, to the point that I finally uninstalled Destiny 2 and haven't looked back. The new Strand powers were interesting but the fact that the entire campaign boiled down to a training montage felt like a slap in the face. The Final Shape is the big conclusion to 10 years of storytelling, so if this one doesn't live up, I can't see many players sticking around for whatever ‘saga' Bungie has planned next.
