Rockstar acquires team behind popular FiveM GTA Online mod

GTA Online has been a huge success for Rockstar and has arguably been a bigger draw to GTA V than the excellent single-player portion of the game. Role Playing servers have been a huge thing for GTA Online too, with many of them flocking to mods like FiveM to enable more gameplay features. Now, Rockstar is bringing the FiveM developers on board to work on future games in an official capacity.

FiveM and RedM offer Roleplay online gameplay for both GTA Online and Red Dead Online. These mods have been the most popular amongst GTA Online players. In an announcement today, Rockstar announced that Cfx.re, the team behind these mods, is now officially joining Rockstar Games.

Rockstar took steps towards this last year by expanding on its policies to allow for Roleplay servers and communities in online titles. This acquisition doesn't mean FiveM or RedM will be going away, but it may increase the chances of an official RP mode implementation for future games.

Rockstar is currently hard at work on Grand Theft Auto 6, which in turn will usher in a new age of GTA Online as well. Official, dedicated RP servers will hopefully now be part of the plan the next game.

KitGuru Says: Back when GTA V first launched on PC, Rockstar and Take-Two were pretty heavy-handed with shutting down mod projects. However, the community refused to stop and eventually, Rockstar did become more accepting of mods as part of the GTA experience. Bringing on the teams behind the most popular modding projects seems like a much better idea than trying to stamp out community creativity.
