Rumour claims Virtuos is working on an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake

Virtuous is a studio that has helmed a number of remasters over the years, including the upcoming remake of Metal Gear Solid 3. According to a new leak this week, the studio has also been contracted for another major remake. A former studio employee has now claimed that the company is working on a remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

A self-proclaimed former employee of Virtuos has claimed that the studio is working on a remake of Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Apparently, graphical touch-ups are being made in Unreal Engine 5, but Bethesda's Creation Engine is still used for physics and gameplay systems. If you think that sounds a little crazy, it isn't as uncommon as you might think. Parts of the Master Chief Collection utilise Unreal Engine too, although in that case, implementation is limited to viewing armour sets in the customisation menus.

If these claims are accurate, then this Oblivion re-release could be ready sometime in 2024. It is also claimed that the studio is working on an original game too, attempting to capture the magic of the massive boss fights in games like Monster Hunter and Shadow of the Colossus. Additionally, the studio is said to be working with Amazon on a new DLC for New World.

If Virtuos is really working on an Oblivion remake, then it would help Bethesda bridge the gap in its release schedule. The studio has Starfield coming out this year and an expansion planned for 2024. This means work on The Elder Scrolls 6 is unlikely to start until 2024 and the development cycle will take at least five years, meaning we won't see a new Elder Scrolls game until the end of the decade.

KitGuru Says: Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game – it even killed off my first Xbox 360. Despite that, it is one of my favourite games ever made. A re-release would be awesome to see but with little proof to go off of right now, I wouldn't put too much stock in this rumour.
