New RTX 4090 Founders Edition spotted with updated power connector

In a recent development, it has come to light that Nvidia has reportedly updated the power connector on their RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti FE graphics cards. However, recent findings suggest these are not the only cards getting the revised connector, as shown by someone who recently got an RTX 4090 FE graphics card.

According to a Reddit user, Nvidia has also implemented the new connector design on the RTX 4090 Founders Edition cards. These cards were the first to be plagued by the issue with melting connectors using the older 12VHPWR connector, so it's only reasonable for them to get the new 12V-2×6 connector to avoid more problems.

Reports that Nvidia was in the process of developing a new power connector emerged just a few weeks ago. While no official announcement has been made by the company regarding any modifications to its power connector, the existence of this new design has been brought to the public's attention through various sources. In the new design, a notable difference can be observed with the inclusion of shortened sense pins (as seen in the photos above).

Due to the reduced length of these pins, the GPU is unable to draw high amounts of power from the PSU unless the cable is fully inserted. In a bid to prevent instances of high power being forced through an improperly connected cable, a modification has been introduced.

KitGuru says: Even if you buy an RTX 4090 FE graphics card now, it's not guaranteed that it will have the new power connector, although eventually, we should see older stock cycled out and replaced.
