Spanish studio has reportedly received Switch 2 development kits

For years now it has seemed as though Nintendo is mere months away from officially announcing a successor to its highly-popular Nintendo Switch system. While the console manufacturer has remained entirely mute on the matter, a Spanish games studio has reportedly received development kits for the Switch 2.

This report comes from YouTuber Nash Weedle who had in the past leaked the existence of Metroid Dread prior to its announcement. According to Weedle (as translated by ResetEra user ‘Angie’):

“The Switch 2 development kit has arrived in Spain. The fact that a Spanish studio already has the kit, given Nintendo's secrecy policy, is a boost in their relations and indicates that we are in the last stages before the console's presentation.”

One of the most prominent Spanish gaming studios is MercurySteam – a Nintendo-aligned team who have in the past assisted with the development of first-party Nintendo games: namely Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread. Of course, there are plenty of other studios in Spain – many who have developed games for the Switch – and so speculation on that front is rather moot.

Regardless, it is exciting to see that we might actually finally start to hear official news on a Nintendo Switch successor at some point in the not-too-distant future. We will have to wait and see.
