Leaker claims new 2D Mario game set to be announced at impending Nintendo Direct

With all of the Summer Game Fest showcases now come and gone – and no sign of Nintendo – fans have been wondering when we could see the console manufacturer host its next Nintendo Direct. Though no official announcements have been made, reports are claiming that a Nintendo Showcase could happen as early as this week. According to one insider, this upcoming Direct will bring with it the announcement of a brand new 2D Mario game.

Twitter user ‘Pyoro_ND’ previously leaked the existence of Everybody 1-2 Switch and Sonic Superstars ahead of their respective announcements. The leaker has now returned with information on the alleged Nintendo Direct which will reportedly occur this week.

According to ‘Pyoro_ND’ “In case you were wondering what games will be announced in this week's #NintendoDirect: – A new 2D #SuperMarioBros” alongside a “remake of a SNES classic.”

Few additional details were shared, though ‘Pyoro_ND’ later tweeted out a gif of Yoshi, suggesting that the remake in question could be for Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Additionally, the leaker confirmed that the 2D Mario game will not feature the word ‘NEW’ in its title, suggesting that this could be the start of a brand new 2D Mario sub-series.

In terms of 2D platformers, the last mainline Mario title was 2012’s New Super Mario Bros U (with New Super Luigi U launching the year after). Of course, the game was later ported to the Switch in 2019, but for all intents and purposes we have not had a new 2D Mario game for over a decade. As such, it will be highly interesting to see what this game looks and plays like. We hopefully won't have long to wait in order to find out.
