Back in 2021, a major GeForce Now database leak revealed a ton of upcoming and unannounced games from publishers across the industry. Some of the titles revealed through this leak have now been announced, or launched in some cases, while others still remain a mystery. Curiously, Final Fantasy IX Remake appeared in this leak and now, sources are claiming this game is still on the way.
Square Enix finally gave in to fan demands and delivered Final Fantasy VII Remake a few years ago, although not quite in the way fans were expecting. The gameplay style changed considerably in the remake, doing away with turn-based combat and moving forward with an action-combat system. Chunks of the story have also been changed in the remake, which is pitched as more of an alternate timeline version of Final Fantasy 7, rather than a 1:1 conversion with prettier graphics.
Final Fantasy 9 could be the next game in the series to get the full remake treatment. Aside from its mention in the Nvidia leak years ago, games reporter, Jeff Grubb, is now corroborating the leak, claiming that his sources have said the project is still ongoing.
Interestingly, unlike the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the new version of Final Fantasy 9 will apparently retain turn-based combat, so this could end up being a game designed primarily with older Final Fantasy fans in mind.
Unfortunately, Square Enix has not made any official announcements at this time and with 2024 shaping up to be the year of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (the sequel to FF7 Remake), a Final Fantasy 9 remake could be even further away.

KitGuru Says: When it comes to the older Final Fantasy games, there are a few that I often hear about – Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10 and 12. I've heard very few people talk passionately about Final Fantasy 9, so this choice for a remake stands out to me. Did any of you play the original Final Fantasy 9? Do you think that game could benefit from a full-blown remake?
